The Life of Discipleship:
St. Paul Through the Lens of Stewardship

Few people in the 2000-year history of Christianity have had as much impact on our faith life as St. Paul. The Church Father St. John Chrysostom’s admiration for this Apostle was such that he claimed no one had imitated Christ as closely as Paul. Paul himself made claims no less daring, “be imitators of me as I am of Christ,” or at other times, simply “be imitators of me” (1 Cor 11:1; 1 Cor 4:16).

In what ways are we to imitate this disciple par excellence of Christ? Or, better yet, what type of discipleship does Paul expect in the Church of God? If we think of stewardship as discipleship beginning with gratitude and culminating with responsibility, then we are well on the way to understanding Paul’s vision of what it means to follow Christ as he does.

We begin, as Paul does in his letters, with thanksgiving. The Apostle adorns the opening lines of his epistles with words of gratitude. His first impulse is to acknowledge the great gift God has given: his Son. God has sent his Son “who was descended from David” (Rom 1:3). That is, he has sent the long expected Messiah (Messiah means the “Anointed One” and is rendered in Greek as Christ) who has established the New Covenant.

Significantly, this New Covenant has given Gentiles (non-Jews) access in the Spirit to the Father. “So then,” Paul explains, “you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God” (Eph 2:19). This is no small matter. Through the waters of baptism, we have gone from strangers wandering in the darkness of this world, to adopted sons and daughters of the Father, the living children of God. For this we give thanks!

Admittedly, the significance of this saving act, as well as the gratitude it evokes, can be wanting. Paul experienced the same phenomena even among the first generation of Christians. Paul has to remind the Romans of what it means to be baptized: “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?” He continues, “we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life” (Rom 6:3-4). Paul is telling us, in two short sentences, everything about discipleship.

We are thankful for entry into the New Covenant through baptism because this means union with Christ, his cross, and resurrection. Furthermore, we manifest our thanksgiving by the way we live – since through Christ, says Paul, you “have become slaves of righteousness” (Rom 6:18).

Paul offers a number of directions on how our thankfulness can be manifested in the world. The primary means is most simple: by our conduct. “Fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these” are contrasted to the fruits of the Spirit: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Gal 5:19-23).

Paul not only provides guidelines by which individuals gauge their conduct in conformity with the Spirit of Christ – but he also expects believers to use their talents and gifts for building up the Body of Christ. His beautiful exposition on gifts in 1 Corinthians highlights that “to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (1 Cor 12:7). Our sharing of gifts, wealth, and resources is, if anything, a reflection of God’s saving act. Paul explains, though Christ “was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich” (2 Cor 8:9).

In sum, discipleship and good stewardship, in the eyes of St. Paul, is a life freely shared with others in a spirit of deep gratitude towards the Father. May Paul also say of us:

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him . . . so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor 1:4-8).

Questions For Reflection:

What is the New Covenant? How do we enter into this covenant, and why is the New Covenant integral to how we live, love, and act as disciples of Christ?

When Paul tells the Corinthians, “be imitators of me” (1 Cor 4:16). In what ways do you think he expected them to imitate him?

Paul’s letters are full of thanksgivings. If I were the one writing, what would I be thankful for?
